UNOAU participates in citizen dialogue on human rights, governance and peace in Africa

UNOAU joined civil society and policy leaders to discuss reforms to strengthen human rights, governance and peace across Africa.

On 12 February, the United Nations Office to the African Union participated in a Citizen’s Dialogue on Human Rights, Justice, Governance and Peace in Africa, organized on the margins of the African Union Summit.

The dialogue was convened by Amani Africa in collaboration with the Open Society Foundations, the AU Economic, Social and Cultural Council and the Pan African Lawyers Union. The event brought together civil society leaders, legal experts, media representatives and policy practitioners to reflect on emerging challenges affecting human rights, democratic governance, justice and peace across the continent.

Participants examined the effectiveness of existing African Union instruments and mechanisms and discussed ways to strengthen accountability, institutional resilience and citizen participation in continental governance processes. The dialogue also generated practical recommendations aimed at reinforcing human rights protection, constitutional governance and durable peace.

UNOAU’s participation highlighted the importance of inclusive dialogue and engagement with civil society in advancing Africa’s peace, governance and human rights agendas.
