UNOAU works closely with the African Union to advance security sector reforms that promote good governance, transparency, accountability, and democratic oversight. A representative, responsive, inclusive, efficient, professional, and accountable security sector that meets the needs of the people is central to sustainable peace, security, and development.
UNOAU supports the AU in implementing the AU Policy Framework on Security Sector Reform (SSR), which provides continental guidance for the AU, RECs/RMs, Member States, and partners in designing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating SSR and Governance (SSR&G) initiatives.

This support includes: SSR&G assistance to Member States upon request; capacity building support and development of AU Operational Guidance Notes to operationalize the SSR Policy Framework; the organization of research and platforms to share and discuss experiences and lessons learned, including the triennial AU Africa SSR Forum and high-level events with RECs/RMs.
Coordination with the UN SSR Unit and relevant field offices ensures coherence across global, regional, and national efforts.
