From 29–30 April, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General to the African Union and Head of the United Nations Office to the African Union, Parfait Onanga-Anyanga, participated in the fifth Joint African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM)–African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) Retreat in Ethiopia.
The retreat reviewed collaboration between the APRM and the AUPSC and examined how governance assessments can better inform conflict prevention, early warning and continental decision-making. Discussions highlighted the need to strengthen the links between governance reviews and peace and security processes to improve the implementation of preventive actions.
Speaking during a high-level panel, the SRSG emphasized that effective governance depends on institutions that enjoy public legitimacy and confidence. He noted that bridging the gap between governance assessments and political action is essential to strengthening peace, stability and resilience across the continent. The retreat conclusions are available on the African Union website.
