On 31 July, Ambassador Christina Markus Lassen, Permanent Representative of Denmark to the United Nations and President of the Security Council for the month of August, and Ambassador Dr. Mohamed Khaled, Permanent Representative of Algeria to the African Union and Chairperson of the Peace and Security Council for August, convened their informal monthly consultative meeting. This meeting was facilitated by the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU).
Discussions covered developments in South Sudan, including preparations for elections, the security and humanitarian situation in Sudan, and security challenges in the Sahel. The AU PSC Chairperson also highlighted thematic priorities, including climate change, education in conflict situations, implementation of the Silencing the Guns roadmap and engagement with the African three members of the UN Security Council (A3).
Both sides underscored the importance of maintaining a comprehensive understanding of ongoing mediation efforts and strengthening cooperation on shared priorities, including counter-terrorism, protection of civilians, the Sahel and Somalia.
They also emphasized the need for early technical-level preparations for the Informal Joint Seminar and Annual Joint Consultative Meeting of the two Councils, scheduled for October.
