On 3 September, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General to the African Union and Head of UNOAU, Parfait Onanga-Anyanga, met with Selwin Hart, Assistant Secretary-General for Climate Action and Just Transition, during his visit to Addis Ababa for the Africa Early Warnings Forum.
Discussions focused on preparations for the High-Level Meeting on Climate Action and Just Transition, scheduled for 23 September during the United Nations General Assembly High-level Week. ASG Hart outlined efforts to build greater support among Member States and partners for accelerating the energy transition, mobilizing climate finance, and strengthening adaptation and resilience.
The two officials also discussed African Union participation in the High-Level Meeting and related solutions dialogues during High-level Week, including engagement by AU leadership and Commissioners working across climate, energy, and peace and security portfolios.
SRSG Onanga-Anyanga reaffirmed UNOAU’s support, together with the Climate Security Mechanism, and underscored the importance of integrating Climate, Peace and Security considerations into the broader climate agenda. He highlighted ongoing efforts to advance the emerging Common African Position on Climate, Peace and Security and the importance of addressing climate-related risks in fragile and conflict-affected settings.
