From 26 to 28 August, UNOAU supported the High-Level Solidarity and Advocacy Mission to Bamako, Mali, led by the African Union Special Envoy on Women, Peace and Security, Ambassador Liberata Mulamula, in conjunction with the Regional Forum on Women's Leadership for Peace in the Sahel and Coastal Countries.
The mission sought to amplify the voices and priorities of women peacebuilders, promote women’s meaningful participation, leadership and protection, and strengthen engagement with national, regional and international stakeholders.
The high-level delegation included Ambassador Mulamula; Ambassador Jainaba Jagne, AU Special Envoy on Children Affected by Armed Conflict; Justice Effie Owuor, former Judge of the High Court and Court of Appeal of Kenya; and Grace Kaboyo, Senior Presidential Adviser of Uganda.
During the mission, the delegation held consultations with senior Malian officials, including the Prime Minister, the Minister for the Promotion of Women, Children and Family, and the Minister for Reconciliation, Peace and National Cohesion. The delegation also met with the United Nations Country Team and African ambassadors accredited to Mali.
The mission also strengthened cooperation between UNOAU and AU mechanisms working to advance the Women, Peace and Security agenda, demonstrating the value of coordinated AU–UN engagement in supporting women’s leadership and participation in peace processes.
