SG’s Message on International Day of UN Peacekeepers 2025

Strengthening Early Warning: UN and AU Join Forces to Tackle Crises and Climate Risks

On 7 May, the United Nations Operations and Crisis Centre (UNOCC) completed a two-day visit to the African Union Commission, facilitated by the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU) and organised by the AU Political Affairs, Peace and Security Department, aimed at deepening collaboration on early warning and crisis response across Africa. UNOAU supports AU in the delivery of training at the AU Peace Support Operations Staff Officers Course

From 5 to 9 May 2025, UNOAU in collaboration with the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre provided technical support to the AU in the delivery of the AU Peace Support Operations Staff Officers Course, which took place in Accra, Ghana. The course was designed in response to a Training Needs Assessment by the AU which identified capacity gaps in the performance of Staff Officers deployed into AU PSOs. Read more.

Joint AU-UN Counter Improvised Explosive Devices Assessment Mission to the MNJTF HQ in N’Djamena, Chad

From 4-9 May 2025, UNOAU along with UNMAS participated in the Joint AU-UN Counter Improvised Explosive Devices (C-IED) Assessment mission to the Multinational Joint Taskforce (MNJTF) Headquarters in the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) in N’Djamena, Chad. The assessment team was led by the AU Peace Support Operations Division supported with representations from UNOAU and UNMAS. Read more.

UNOAU, AU and ISS Honour Peacekeepers Through Joint Photo Exhibition at AUC Headquarters

Addis Ababa, 9 June 2025 – The United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU), in partnership with the African Union Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security (AU PAPS) and the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), concluded a powerful photo exhibition today at the African Union Commission (AUC) in Addis Ababa. UNOAU and AU participates at the Stockholm Forum on Peace and Development

On 14 May, UNOAU participated in a roundtable session titled: “Two-way Street: A discussion of emerging best practices related to bottom-up and people-centred approaches to conflict prevention and sustainable peace on the African continent”. The UNOAU co-organised the event, together with the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, as part of the Just Future Alliance and the World Bank projects. Read more.

UNOAU participates in the Advisory Assessment Inspection of Pledged Ugandan Air Assets in Entebbe, Uganda

From 18–26 May, the United Nations Office to the African Union participated in an Advisory Assessment Inspection of air assets pledged by the Ugandan Air Force for deployment under the African Union Support Mission in Somalia. The inspection took place in Entebbe, Uganda, and was carried out by a joint team comprising representatives from the African Union, the United Nations Support Office in Somalia, AUSSOM, and UNOAU, who jointly provided technical expertise and operational guidance. SRSG to the AU and Head of UNOAU Meets Permanent Representative of Sierra Leone to the AU and Chair of the AU PSC for May 2025

On 7 May, SRSG Parfait Onanga Anyanga met with Ambassador Harold Bundu Safa of the Republic of Sierra Leone and the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) for the month of May, to exchange views on the AUPSC Programme of Work. Read more.

SRSG and Head of UNOAU Participates in the Annual Women, Peace and Security Focal Points Network Thematic Meeting

From 13–14 May, SRSG Parfait Onanga-Anyanga participated in the annual Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Focal Points Network Thematic Meeting on “Inclusive Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding,” co-hosted by Norway and Japan in Oslo, Norway. The WPS Focal Points Network remains a key platform for advancing gender equality in peace processes globally. The meeting convened over 100 participants, including government representatives, foreign affairs officials from Japan and Norway, as well as representatives from the African Union, UN Women and UN DPPA. On 15 May, SRSG Parfait Onanga Anyanga participated in the 2nd AU-UN High Level Dialogue on Human Rights in Geneva, convened by OHCHR and the AU, and co-chaired by High Commissioner Volker Türk and AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador Bankole Adeoye. Read more.
