On 19 February, at the 1331st meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council in an open session on Climate Change, Peace and Security in Africa, Parfait Onanga-Anyanga, Special Representative of the Secretary-General to the African Union and Head of UNOAU, warned that climate change is no longer a distant risk and is already driving instability across the continent. SRSG Parfait Onanga-Anyanga meets with the Ambassador of Australia to Ethiopia and Representative to the African Union on climate–peace–security and renewable energy cooperation ahead of COP31

On 19 February, the Special Representative of the Secretary General to the African Union and Head of the United Nations Office to the African Union met with the Ambassador of Australia to Ethiopia and Representative to the African Union, Dr Peter Hunter.
Discussions focused on climate change and the links between climate, peace and security, as well as opportunities to strengthen cooperation ahead of the Thirty First Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to be held in Antalya, Türkiye. On 12 February, on the margins of the African Union Summit, the Special Representative of the Secretary General to the African Union and Head of the United Nations Office to the African Union, Mr. Parfait Onanga-Anyanga met with the Chair of the African Group of Negotiators on Climate Change, Dr Antwi Boasiako Amoah of Ghana. 26th AU–UN Joint Task Force meeting on peace and security

On 16 February, the UN-AU Joint Task Force (JTF) on Peace and Security held its twenty-sixth consultative meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The AUC and the UN Secretariat were represented respectively by Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, and Ambassador Mohamed Edrees, AU Permanent Representative to the UN; and the United Nations Under Secretaries-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo and Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General to the African Union and Head of UNOAU, Parfait Onanga-Anyanga. The Joint Task Force reviewed the status of the UN-AU partnership and progress in implementing the Joint UN-AU Framework for Enhanced Partnership in Peace and Security. Participants exchanged views on peace and security developments and mediation efforts in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan. [Read more]

UNOAU participates in Joint AU FGS operational assessment for AUSSOM

From 22 to 28 February, the United Nations Office to the African Union participated in the Joint African Union and Federal Government of Somalia operational assessment for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia. The assessment reviewed progress against agreed benchmarks and examined operational conditions shaping future configuration options for the mission. Discussions considered progress made by the Federal Government of Somalia, as well as ongoing challenges related to intelligence, leadership capacity, logistics and financing. [Read more]
UNOAU leads protection of civilians training for peace operations

From 2 to 13 February, the United Nations Office to the African Union led the facilitation of a Comprehensive Protection of Civilians course held in Nairobi, Kenya. The training was organized in collaboration with the African Union Compliance and Accountability Team, the International Peace Support Training Centre, the British Peace Support Team Africa and the Slovenia Peacekeeping Training Centre. It aimed to strengthen the capacity of military, police and civilian personnel to assess, plan and implement protection of civilians mandates in African Union and United Nations peace operations. UNOAU participates in regional dialogue on weapons and ammunition management

From 4 to 5 February 2026, the United Nations Office to the African Union participated in a UNDP and Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre regional dialogue on weapons and ammunition management in the context of preventing violent conflict in the Gulf of Guinea and the Sahel. The dialogue was held in Accra, Ghana. Senior representatives from the Government of Ghana, UNDP and KAIPTC reiterated support for coordinated preventive strategies and alignment with AU mechanisms, including the AU Standing Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons and DDR frameworks.
