African Union–African Group of Negotiators Consultative Meeting on Climate, Peace and Security in Africa
On 3 June, the African Union Commission and the African Group of Negotiators on Climate Change convened a consultative meeting in Bonn, Germany, with the participation and support of UNOAU and GIZ. The meeting focused on advancing the draft Common African Position on Climate Change, Peace and Security ahead of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Bodies session. Participants discussed priorities including climate finance, adaptation, early warning, climate-induced mobility and policy coherence, while reaffirming the importance of African-led approaches and strengthened partnerships to address climate-related peace and security risks. UNOAU participates in workshop on development of force generation tools
From 1 to 5 June, UNOAU participated in a workshop in Nairobi, Kenya, alongside the African Union and Regional Economic Communities and Regional Mechanisms to strengthen force generation for the African Standby Force and AU peace support operations. Discussions focused on improving planning, coordination, readiness, verification and deployment through a capability-based approach. Participants also agreed on measures to enhance coordination and strengthen the responsiveness and sustainability of African-led peace operations. Read more.
AU, UNOAU, ISS and IPSS commemorate International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers in Addis Ababa
On 8 June, the African Union, UNOAU, the Institute for Security Studies and the Institute for Peace and Security Studies concluded the joint commemoration of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers in Addis Ababa under the theme “Invest in Peace.” The event honoured the service and sacrifice of peacekeepers through a photo exhibition, wreath-laying ceremony, keynote addresses and a panel discussion. Participants highlighted the importance of innovation, stronger UN–AU partnerships, sustainable financing and inclusive peacebuilding to enhance the effectiveness of peace operations across Africa. AU and UN issue joint statement on the Day of the African Child 2026
On 16 June, the African Union Special Envoy on Children Affected by Armed Conflict and the UN Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict issued a joint statement marking the Day of the African Child under the theme “Ensuring universal access to water, sanitation and hygiene for every child in Africa.” The statement highlighted the devastating impact of conflict on children's access to essential WASH services and called for stronger protection of children, critical infrastructure and humanitarian access to safeguard children's health, dignity and future. International Day of Women in Diplomacy
On 18 June, SRSG Parfait Onanga-Anyanga participated in the International Day of Women in Diplomacy and Gender Parity Pledges Ceremony in Addis Ababa, organized by the Women in Diplomacy in Ethiopia Network. In his closing remarks, he welcomed the establishment of the International Gender Champions Addis Ababa Chapter and emphasized the importance of sustained leadership, accountability and measurable commitments to advance gender equality. The event reaffirmed the vital role of women's leadership and inclusive diplomacy in building more effective institutions and lasting peace. Read more.
Informal monthly meeting of UNSC President and AUPSC Chairperson for June 2026
On 18 June, UNOAU facilitated the informal monthly consultative meeting between the President of the United Nations Security Council and the Chair of the African Union Peace and Security Council for June. Discussions focused on shared priorities, while reaffirming the importance of regular dialogue, mediation and stronger coordination between the two Councils. Read more.
UNOAU participates in AU-led pre-deployment verification of Kenyan contingent for AUSSOM
From 13 to 23 June, UNOAU participated in the African Union-led pre-deployment verification of the Kenyan Defence Forces contingent preparing for deployment to AUSSOM. The assessment reviewed operational, logistical, medical and administrative readiness following a 12-week pre-deployment training programme. It also included inspections of equipment, documentation and scenario-based exercises to assess operational performance and compliance with international humanitarian and human rights law. The verification confirmed the contingent’s readiness and reinforced AU–UN cooperation in strengthening standards for African peace support operations. Read more.
UNOAU supports AU assessment of African Standby Force training in North Africa
From 22 to 24 June, UNOAU supported an African Union assessment mission to the North African Regional Capability in Cairo, Egypt, to review implementation of the African Standby Force Training Directives (2024–2026). The mission assessed regional progress and identified priorities for the next training cycle, including integrated mission planning, mission support, civilian rostering and protection of civilians. Participants also discussed challenges related to funding, regional exercises and digital learning, and agreed on recommendations to strengthen training, resource mobilization and operational readiness. UNOAU participates in regional workshop on security sector reform and governance in West Africa
From 23 to 25 June, UNOAU participated in a regional workshop in Dakar, Senegal, organized by the African Union and ECOWAS to strengthen parliamentary oversight of security sector reform in West Africa. Bringing together parliamentarians from across the region, the workshop focused on oversight and accountability, legislative and budgetary scrutiny, and emerging security challenges, including terrorism and organized crime. Participants also developed a draft roadmap to strengthen regional cooperation and parliamentary engagement in security sector governance, supported by the African Union and ECOWAS. Read more.

From 21 to 25 June, UNOAU participated in the AU–UN–North African Regional Capability (NARC) Technical Assessment Mission to Algeria. The mission reviewed logistics planning, supply chain management, strategic deployment stocks and regional interoperability in support of the African Standby Force and AU-led peace support operations. African Union Convenes Roundtable Dialogue on Climate, Peace and Security in Africa
On 30 June, the African Union Commission, with support from UNOAU and Australia as the incoming COP31 Presidency of Negotiations, convened a roundtable dialogue on Climate, Peace and Security in Addis Ababa. Bringing together AU Member States, Regional Economic Communities and UN partners, the dialogue focused on strengthening collaboration to address climate-related security risks across Africa. SRSG Parfait Onanga-Anyanga highlighted climate change as a growing risk multiplier and reaffirmed UN support for the African Union’s leadership in advancing the Common African Position on Climate, Peace and Security. SRSG Parfait Onanga-Anyanga meets AU Special Envoy on Women, Peace and Security
On 30 June, SRSG Parfait Onanga-Anyanga met with AU Special Envoy on Women, Peace and Security, Ambassador Liberata Mulamula, to review ongoing collaboration and discuss priorities for advancing the Women, Peace and Security agenda. Discussions focused on implementing the Special Envoy's Strategic Plan, strengthening advocacy, communications, mediation initiatives and institutional capacity-building. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation through initiatives such as She Stands for Peace and agreed to establish an annual strategic retreat to strengthen coordination and joint planning.
